Meteorological Software

Leonardo’s meteorological software packages are designed to cover a wide range of tasks to suit different users. This includes the detection of adverse weather conditions, tracking and probabilistic short-term-forecasting, and generation and distribution of national mosaics/composites. Our software allows to process heterogeneous radar networks (3rd party radars), to seamlessly integrate other sensor data (lidar, satellite, lightning, etc.), and to utilize dual polarization information in a sophisticated manner.

ShearScout

ShearScout® Sonic and ShearScout® 3D provide integrated solutions for wind shear detection and 3D weather monitoring at airports. Focus can be put on the aerodrome itself or include the glide path and the airport hinterland. Different hard- and software options allow an individual configuration according to the local meteorological conditions and the available budget. ShearScout® components like e.g. RainScoutATC are available as stand-alone products or as part of an integrated ShearScout® solution for wind shear detection.

LLWAS

Leonardo’s low-level wind shear alert system (LLWAS) product is designed to enhance the safety, regularity and efficiency of aviation in changing wind conditions based on ground wind sensors. It combines the latest UCAR Phase-3 LLWAS technology and Leonardo system expertise to detect low-level wind shear along the runway corridor and issue timely warnings to ATC staff.
RainShear is Leonardo’s display software for LLWAS systems. Integration of wind data from LLWAS with complementary wind sensors such as weather radar and lidar provides airports with a complete wind shear alert solution.
LLWAS is available as a stand-alone product or as part of an integrated solution for wind shear detection.

Lidar and Windshear Detection

Wind shear is a change in wind speed and/or direction over a short distance. In aviation, low-level wind shear and microbursts pose a serious threat to aircraft during take-off and landing. Today, there are two main types of wind shear alert systems on the market.
The ground-based LLWAS (Low-Level Wind Shear Alert System) use data from anemometers installed within and around the aerodrome. The data is processed via a sophisticated LLWAS algorithm to calculate the resulting wind shear and to derive the alerts. Different software packages allow convenient control of the LLWAS system and user-friendly display of wind shear alerts.
Wind shear can also be detected via a weather radar and a scanning Doppler-lidar. When combined, both sensors make up an all-weather wind shear detection system. The lidar system provides wind data in no-rain weather situations while the weather radar performs best in the presence of rain. Dedicated software packages process data from both systems, combine wind shear information and display alerts.
